The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) is the top tier of the men's tennis tour. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the top tier of the women's tennis tour. They operate year-round, separately to the four grand slams.
Despite the popularity of women's tennis at the grand slams, the WTA has recently reported significant financial and operational issues. Poor management has led to poor organisation of tournaments and a lack of real promotion for the tour. This has led to players being paid far less than their male counterparts, and rumours in 2023 that the WTA may be facing bankruptcy. By contrast, the ATP has been highly successful and profitable.
